Gold, silver miners show a glint of hope

By optionMONSTER June 01, 2012, 11:29:52 AM EDT

It's an ugly market today, and precious metals are the only industry getting any love.

Gold and silver miners are the leading groups so far today on our researchLAB market-analysis tool, with gains of about 5 percent each on average. The only other class of securities that is showing profits are Treasury-bond funds, which typically move in the opposite direction as equities overall. Four of the five biggest individual gainers are also gold or silver miners, shown on the screen shot below.

To the downside, investors are liquidating home builders and luxury-mattress companies. Both groups significantly outperformed the S&P 500 earlier in the year and now appear to be getting liquidated as the broader market comes under pressure.

researchLAB's rankings are based on more than 100 groups of stocks, which provide a unique view of the market based on real trading themes rather than static index membership.
