Friday's Top Performing Small Cap Stocks (CPHD, ATHN, RRR, PIP, LSCC)

Last week, the Russell 2000 Index rose 1.6 percent, while the Standard & Poor's Small Cap 600 Index gained slightly less, 1.5 percent. For the day, the Russell 2000 was flat and the S&P Small Cap 600 was down fractionally. Yet for the year, the Russell has gained 8.1 percent, with the S&P Small Cap rising 8.9 percent.

Friday's Top Performing Small Cap Stocks (Data provided by Google Finance)

Cepheid (Nasdaq: CPHD) : The developer of testing systems for molecular and genetic-based diseases released fresh earnings guidance following positive second-quarter results, which impressed investors.

athenahealth (Nasdaq: ATHN) : Shares of the provider of cloud-based health care business-management services hit a 52-week high after turning in better-than-expected Q2 results and announced that it is acquiring smaller competitor Proxsys.

RSC Holdings ( RRR ) : The equipment rental provider reported second-quarter revenue grew 22 percent as it posted a small profit, reversing a loss in the year-ago quarter. Shares are up 33 percent this year.

PharmAthene (Amex: PIP) : A biodefense company that develops products to counter chemical and biological weapons including an anthrax vaccine, PharmAthene's shares have doubled in the past year since a new CEO took charge.

Lattice Semiconductor (Nasdaq: LSCC) : The supplier of programmable logic chips reported its best sales quarter in a decade, as demand for its new products grew substantially. Shares reached a 52-week high of $7.38 on March 4.
