France Would Ask GE to Sell Alstom's Wind Operations to Areva -- Report

France would prefer that General Electric Co. ( GE ), should it acquire Alstom's power division, sell the French company's offshore wind turbine business to French nuclear power group Areva SA (ARVCY, AREVA.FR), which also has such operations, the newspaper Les Echos reported Friday on its website.

The newspaper cited a government source as saying "There is an interest in having one French player in this sector." And an industry source told the newspaper GE "does not believe" in the sector.

The roughly $17 billion GE has offered to take over the power division would allow Alstom to focus on its rail business, which makes France's signature TGV high-speed trains.
