Ford Uses Coca-Cola's PlantBottle Tech - Analyst Blog

Ford Motor Co. ( F ) and The Coca-Cola Company ( KO ) have collaborated to produce innovative car interior fabric from renewable materials. The Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid research vehicle has used Coca-Cola Company's PlantBottle Technology to make fabric for seat cushions, head restrains and door panel inserts among others. This is the first time that this technology is being used for anything other than packaging.

Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid concept vehicle, featuring Coca-Cola PlantBottle Technology interior fabric, will be showcased in the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.

Ford has been working on renewable and recyclable materials to provide sustainable designs and products. The material produced by Ford using PlantBottle Technology comprises up to 30% of plant-based materials.

This collaboration will help in reducing the consumption of petroleum and other fossil fuels by replacing them with renewable materials. The usage of PlantBottle interior fabrics in Ford models in the U.S. will replace about 4 million pounds of petroleum-derived materials and save almost 295,000 gallons of gasoline and 6,000 barrels of oil.

Moreover, this collaboration will benefit from the huge client base of both companies. Ford and Coca Cola have customer base in 200 countries across six continents.

Fusion Energi is one of the most fuel efficient vehicles of Ford. It can travel up to 620 miles according to EPA. Moroever, it can cover up to 21 miles in electric-only mode. It is also equipped with SmartGauge with EcoGuide, which helps increase efficiency.
