Automaker Ford Motor Company ( F ) late Tuesday said it would likely re-initiate its dividend payouts in the "near term," as the company continues on the road back to financial health.

Ford CFO Lewis Booth said at the company's investor meeting that once it achieves an investment grade rating, it will once again begin paying dividends to shareholders. That event could happen in the "near term," the company said.

In order to achieve that rating, Ford must show a positive earnings trend, repay one of its remaining loans, and get a new contract completed with the powerful UAW union later this year. Ford suspended its dividend payouts in late 2006, amid a wide restructuring plan.

Ford shares fell 9 cents, or -0.7%, in premarket trading Wednesday.

Ford Motor Company ( F ) does not currently pay a dividend.
