Financial stocks are ending with steep declines today with the NYSE Financial Sector Index falling 0.9% and the S&P Financial 100 Index retreating 1.4%.

In company news, American Express Co. ( AXP ) is lower in late trade, with shares of the credit card issuer slipping about 1.3% to $76.30 apiece and the company declaring a regular quarterly dividend of $0.23 per common share, payable Nov. 8 to shareholders of record on Oct. 4.

In other sector news,

(+) SIR, Reworks its contract with REIT Management & Research LLC on how fees are calculated and paid. It also said shareholders will elect all of the trustees on its board each year rather than for staggered terms.

(-) C, Financial Times reports the bank's trading revenue fell sharply compared to year-ago levels due to a mid-summer slowdown.
