Today's calendar is dominated by the Federal Reserve's policy announcement at 2 p.m. ET.

Economists expect the central bank to reduce the pace of bond purchases to $35 billion a month from $45 billion. Its key overnight lending rate is forecast to remain unchanged at 0.25 percent.

Weekly mortgage applications and crude-oil inventories come out earlier in the session, at 7 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. ET.

FedEx announces earnings before the opening bell, while Jabil Circuit and Red Hat follow after the close.

Tomorrow's agenda is also active, featuring initial jobless claims, the Philadelphia Fed's regional activity index, and natural-gas inventories. Kroger, BlackBerry, Rite-Aid, and Pier 1 Imports report in the morning. Oracle, Tibco Software, and Smith & Wesson issue their numbers after the closing bell.
