European stocks gained on expectations of easier monetary policy when the European Central Bank meets on Thursday.

Mixed data had little effect on sentiment. Markit said Wednesday its composite purchasing managers index for the euro area, a monthly gauge of activity across manufacturing and services, edged down to 51.9 in October from 52.2 in September but still just beat expectations.

Eurozone retail sales fell in September, and UK industrial production in September was stronger than expected.

In ADR news, ING Groep ( ING ) firmed although it missed Q3 profit expectations, but the group also announced that its restructuring was nearing completion.

The FTSE-100 was last down 0.08% at 6,741.69, the DAX up 0.35% at 9,040.87 and the CAC-40 up 0.79% at 4,286.93.
