ETF Update: Exchange-Traded Funds Edging Higher With Broader Market

Active broad-market exchange-traded funds at mid-day:

SPDR S&P 500 ( SPY ): up 0.22 (+0.16%) to $139.50.

iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index ( EEM ): down 0.02 (-0.05%) to $41.

Financial Select Sector SPDR ( XLF ): flat at $15.65.

PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 ( QQQ ): has turned positive and is now up 0.19 (+0.3%) to around $64.

iShares Russell 2000 Index ( IWN ): up $0.23 (+0.33%) to $70.78.

Winners and Losers

Financial -

Financial Select Sector SPDRs are down a penny at $15.64; Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) are down 37 cents at near $104; Its bearish counterpart, the Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares are up 4 cents at $17.76.

Technology -

Among tech ETFs , the iShares Dow Jones US Technology ETF (IYW) is up 37 cents at $69.04; the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) is up 12 cents to $28.42; the iShares S&P North American Tech-Software Index (IGM) is up 41 cents to $64.96; and the iShares S&P North American Tech-Software ETF (IGV) is up 82 cents to $59.92.

Among chip-maker ETFs, the SPDR S&P Semiconductor fund (XSD) is up 21 cents to $40.92 while the iShares PHLX SOX Semiconductor Sector fund (SOXX) is up 22 cents to $49.44. The SPDR S&P International Technology Sector ETF is up 24 cents at $24.94.

The Vanguard Industrials ETF is up 28 cents to $68.80 while the iShares Dow Jones US Industrial is up 21 cents to $70.17. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR is up 12 cents to $36.34. PowerShares Dynamic Software are up 14 cents to $26.37 and the SPDR Morgan Stanley Technology is up 73 cents to $64.51.

Energy -

Energy ETFs are mostly higher, with the Dow Jones U.S. Energy Fund (IYE) rising 19 cents to $40.31 while the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) is up 30 cents to $70.54.

Commodities - Crude oil for January delivery is up 25 cents to $87 a barrel. December natural gas is up 6 cents to $3.89 per 1 million BTU. Among energy ETFs, the U.S. Oil Fund (USO) is up 3 cents to around $32 and and the U.S. Natural Gas fund (UNG) is up 32 cents to $22.85.

December gold is up $5.60 to $1,729.20 per ounce while December silver is up 38 cents to $33.31 per ounce. Among precious-metal funds, the SPDR Gold Shares Trust (GLD) is up 186 cents to $167.55 and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) is up 17 cents to $32.28.

Healthcare -

Healthcare ETFs are higher as well: The Healthcare SPDR ETF (XLV) has turned slightly negative; Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) is up but off day highs; the iShares Dow Jones US Healthcare (IYH) is up 12 cents to $82.85; Biotech ETF iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index (IBB) is up 16 cents to $136.37.

Consumer -

Consumer ETFs are higher. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) is up just 1 cent to $35.12; the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) is up 29 cents to $74.71; and the Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) is up 21 cents to $90.045.

Among retail ETFs, the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) is up 43 cents to $62.28; the PowerShares Dynamic Retail fund (PMR) is up 19 cents to $25.34; and the Market Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) is up 15 cents to $44.25 having earlier landed a new 52 week high.
