Energy Stocks, Crude Slightly Lower; Chesapeake Said Near Selecting New Independent Chairman

Energy stocks are slightly lower this afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index currently down 0.03% while the S&P Energy Index is down 0.21%. Crude oil for July delivery is down 14 cents at $83.18 a barrel. July natural gas is down 3 cent at $2.205 per 1 million BTUs.

In company news, Chesapeake Energy Corp ( CHK ) shares are down about 2% this afternoon with Reuters reporting the company's board of directors is close to choosing a new, independent chairman.

"We're getting close, I hope," CHK board member Don Nickles reportedly told reporters late yesterday following a hearing in Washington. "We were trying to get it done before our annual meeting. We didn't quite get it done, but we were close," the former U.S. Senator said.

Separately, CHK shares were downgraded at Bernstein Research from Outperform to Market Perform, citing a lack of near-term catalysts. It set a $21.00 a share price target for the stock.
