Shortly after Microsoft ( MSFT ) introduced its new Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system, online auction company eBay ( EBAY ) said it was developing an app for the OS.

EBay announced Monday that the app will let site members view, bid on and sell products; members can also share products with friends and make instantaneous bids with the "Best Offer" feature. The program will leverage Windows Phone 7's push notification capacity to stream auction updates to eBay users in real-time, the company says.

"We built this app from the ground up to take full advantage of Microsoft's operating system," eBay vice president of mobile and platform business solutions Steve Yankovich indicated.

The eBay app will be available free to Windows Phone 7 users - a bid to make eBay bidding more accessible to smartphone devotees. The mobile web is growing rapidly - some say mobile web use will outstrip conventional internet use within a few years - and the introduction of the new app is a sign of how eager eBay is to court mobile-web surfers.
