Eastman Chemical Company ( EMN ) has introduced a new polyvinyl butyral (PVB) solar interlayer called SaflexSG to help control solar heat gain in buildings. The product brings solace to the design professionals who face the challenge of designing projects in hot climates.

SaflexSG solar interlayer, built using Eastman Chemical's proprietary IR absorbing technology, offers a 0.55 Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and more than 70% Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) with 3 millimeter (mm) clear glass.

These properties of SaflexSG enhances its solar heat gain performance while maintaining high levels of visible light transmittance when compared with monolithic glass and clear monolithic glass laminates made with standard clear PVB interlayer.

Usage of SaflexSG interlayer is expected to meet or exceed regulations for laminated safety glazing when properly selected, laminated and installed. SaflexSG interlayer is well equipped to provide exceptional durability when exposed to natural weathering like other Saflex interlayers.

Saflex SG interlayer is advantageous as it provides safety glazing, glass shard retention, structural integrity, sound abatement, security and storm protection. Saflex SG can also withstand severe weather conditions and can meet or exceed strict hurricane codes.

Saflex SG interlayer can be used for residential as well as commercial construction purpose including specialty applications such as bent glass, point fixed glass systems, overhead awnings, and glazing for non-conditioned spaces. The product is also applicable for large glass facades, curtain walls, storefronts, windows and skylights.

The other strength area for Saflex SG is that it can be ordered and handled like ordinary PVB; hence have lesser shelf life limitations and supply chain issues for the fabricator compared to IR reflective coated monolithic glass.

Eastman Chemical currently maintains a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Other companies in the chemical industry that are worth considering include Olin Corp. ( OLN ), Celanese Corporation ( CE ) and LyondellBasell Industries NV ( LYB ). While Olin retains a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), both Celanese and LyondellBasell hold a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
