Earnings and housing are the main items on today's agenda.

Comcast, DuPont, McDonald's, Verizon, United Technology, Lockheed Martin, and Ingersoll-Rand are among the most significant names to announce results this morning. Apple and Microsoft, two of the biggest companies by market cap, follow in the afternoon, along with Broadcom, Juniper Networks, Xilinx, and Electronic Arts.

The first economic report is the consumer-price index at 8:30 a.m. ET. Forecasters expect a 0.3 percent gain overall and 0.2 percent excluding food and energy. The index rose a respective 0.4 percent and 0.3 percenti in the previous month. It's unlikely to affect sentiment because inflation hasn't been a worry for investors recently.

Attention then turns to residential real estate, with the FHFA's home-price index at 9 a.m. ET and existing home sales for June an hour later. FHFA isn't tracked by economists, but sales are expected to come in at a 5 million annualized pace, up from 4.89 million in the previous month.

The Richmond Federal Reserve's regional activity index is also scheduled for release at 10 a.m. ET.
