Durable goods, earnings on tap

Durable goods orders are the main item on today's calendar of events.

The Commerce Department will release the numbers for September at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect an increase of 3.5 percent compared with growth of 0.1 percent the previous month. Excluding volatile transportation orders, the gain is forecast to be 0.3 percent versus a 0.1 percent decline in August.

Companies including Eaton, Aon, Procter & Gamble, Sherwin Williams and United Parcel Service will announce quarterly results in the morning, as well.

Next week's agenda is relatively quiet for economic data, but earnings remain active.

Monday brings industrial production and capacity utilization, which are informative but seldom impact sentiment. Pending home sales come out as well.

September's retail sales release, delayed by the government shutdown, follows on Tuesday. Producer prices, the Case-Shiller index of home prices and consumer confidence will also be published.

Wednesday is perhaps the most important day, with European economic sentiment early. ADP's private-sector payroll report and the Federal Reserve's monetary announcement come later in the session.

Thursday brings weekly jobless claims and Friday has key manufacturing data from China, Europe and the United States.
