DISH Network Corp. ( DISH ) - the second largest satellite TV operator in the U.S. - will be offering its popular Hopper device powered with Control4 Corporation 's ( CTRL ) home automation technology.

Control4 offers a home operating system that helps in controling music, video, lighting, temperature, security and communications. It also provides subscription services, which allow consumers to control and monitor their homes remotely from their through smartphones, tablets or laptops.

In order to boost the auto installation procedure of Control4's applications into DISH's devices, DISH will employ Control4's Simple Device Discovery Protocol (SDDP).

Hence, the integration will help the users to easily operate the Hopper devices through Control4 remotes, touch screen or smart phone app. Moreover, the user can easily order for Pay-Per-View and On-Demand content or change channels and search for program. Going forward, the Control4 remote will also have the ability to manage DVR recordings and browse the entire Video-On-Demand catalog.

In Jul, DISH allowed third-party application developers to build programs on the company's application programming interface (API). This will enable users to operate DISH's popular Hopper devices more easily.

Higher proliferation of smartphones and tablets coupled with enormous success of the third-party applications available on Apple Inc. 's ( AAPL ) iOS and Google Inc. 's ( GOOG ) Android platform has induced DISH to initiate such offerings.

DISH Network's Hopper DVR device has already gained popularity. The implementation of the open source platform concept, which is followed by most smartphone and tablet developers, is expected to improve the company's performance going forward.

Currently, DISH Network carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell).
