Investors plowed almost $250 million into the ETF market's
two-biggest junk bond funds, as markets fell sharply on foreboding
views that an aid package to Spain fell short of what the country
really needs, namely a formal bailout.
The SPDR Barclays Capital High Yield Bond ETF (NYSEArca:JNK) was
Friday's most popular fund, with inflows of $146.3 million and the
iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond Fund (NYSEArca:HYG) added
$99.8 million in fresh assets.
On the flipside, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca:SPY) and the
SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEArca:GLD) physical bullion ETF were among the
least popular funds on Friday, with SPY losing $736.5 million and
GLD losing $122.3 million to redemptions, respectively.
Overall, net flows were negative to the tune of $1.22 billion,
and total U.S.-listed ETF assets fell on Friday, July 20 to less
than $1.195 trillion from more than $1.204 trillion on Thursday,
July 19, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.
Both the net outflows and falling stock markets contributed to
the decline in assets, as the Dow Jones industrial average fell
120.79 points, or 0.93 percent, to 12,822.57 on worries about the
eurozone. Markets in Asia and Europe were sharply lower on Monday,
as those concerns bled into the new week.
