Canada stocks closed up 52 points and hit its highest levels since 2008, boosted by oil companies like Suncor Energy Inc. (SU.TO, SU) on earnings and on higher crude prices amid talk of possible supply and demand issues as the U.S. and European Union introduced new sanctions against Russia.

Most sectors were higher led by Energy, but Industrials capped gains.

Comex gold futures eased while spot gold was little changed as investors veered towards buying stocks more than some other assets.

Among individual stocks, Suncor added 3.05% after reporting record earnings.
