Canadian stocks closed lower on Thursday, down 0.8% dragged down by the closure of the US government, and the continued fiscal brinkmanship that is generating volatility. All sectors were lower, with Metals and Mining providing the biggest drag on the broader index.

Central bankers continued to chime in on the effect of the government closure.

Dennis Lockhart, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, said "if it is protracted then I would expect there would be some measurable impact at least in fourth-quarter growth."

Talisman Energy Inc. was the most active share with no fresh specific stock news driving volume. The stock close down 2.34% with 6.1 million shares changing hands.
