The acquisition will fortify Bruker's position in the life
science markets. Prairie's world leading multiphoton product
offerings will synergize well with the existing life science
atomic force microscopy (Bio-AFM) systems of Bruker Nano Surfaces
Bruker's decision to acquire Prairie will help it to enter the
fluorescence microscopy market, which primarily comprises of
multipoint scanning confocal, single-photon confocal, and
multiphoton products. Prairie caters to a market that is
estimated at more than $150 million, annually.
A privately held company, Prairie works with a global workforce
of only 30 employees. It generated revenues of about $11 million
in 2012. It is a forerunner in the multiphoton fluorescence
microscopy field, having contributed significantly to research in
the fields of neurobiology and cell biology through innovative
optical instrument designs and effective software features.
Prairie's state-of-the-art solutions promise to provide dynamic
opportunities for BRKR to explore new untapped markets.
Prairie boasts of a strong customer base on the ground of its
path-breaking fluorescence microscopic products. Scientists
conducting experiments in photoactivation, photostimulation,
photoablation, optogenetics, and electrophysiology studies, use
Prairie Technologies' systems.
Prairie's offerings include the Ultima and Ultima In-Vivo,
two-photon microscopy product lines designed for neurobiologists
and cell biologists. Such innovative products and flexible
configurations facilitate both advanced brain slice as well as
intra-vital studies deep into tissues to over 900 microns in
penetration depth. Another well-known product from the company is
Opterra, a multipoint scanning confocal fluorescence microscope
that promises to deliver high-speed, live cell imaging and
observation of fast cellular events.
Prairie Technologies, on the other hand, seeks to utilize the
global marketing, distribution and service capabilities of the
Bruker Nano Surfaces division to expand customer base.
