BorgWarner Inc.
(
BWA
) has announced the introduction of a new three-stage turbo
charging technology in BMW's M Performance diesel engine, the
most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine in the world. The
company's innovative technology will enhance the engine's
performance, fuel efficiency and reduce emission level.
The M550d xDrive Sedan and Touring, X5 M50d Touring, and X6 M50d
models of BMW M automobiles are equipped with this 3.0-liter
engine. It provides maximum output of 280 kW (381 HP) and a
maximum torque of 740 Nm (546 lb-ft).
BorgWaner's turbocharging systems consist of two BV45
high-pressure variable turbine geometry turbochargers, which are
integrated to one larger B2 low-pressure water-cooled
turbocharger. This increases the capability of the engine
compared to the two-stage turbocharging systems.
The BMW M550d xDrive Sedan with the three-stage turbocharging
technology increases output by 25% to 93.6 kW per liter of
displacement from 75.2 kW per liter by BMW 740d vehicle with
two-stage turbocharging system. The new engine is also 8% more
fuel efficient and complies with the Euro 6 emissions standards.
