BMC Mainframe Solution for Cetelem - Analyst Blog

BMC Software Inc. 's ( BMC ) Control-M Workload Automation suite has recently tasted success at the German financial services company Dresdner-Cetelem Kreditbank GmbH. The German firm is now offering optimal services at rational costs, thanks to its deployment of the BMC solution.

Based in Munich, Cetelem is a joint venture between BNP Paribas Personal Finance S.A. and Commerzbank AG. The bank has been conferred a top ranking on the basis of asset size by Bloomberg and Forbes.

With sizeable operations across the globe, the firm was much in need of streamlining and automating its huge workload. It was a challenge for the financial institution to support transitioning and evolve technology in order to adopt a centralized model across its European operating subsidiaries.

The task seems to have been taken care of with BMC Software's workload automation suite that offers a range of capabilities required to manage traditional job scheduling, batch service management and workload automation for its mainframe and forthcoming cloud-enabled environment. The synchronization of workload and increasing flexibility in the work environment thereof, is expected to mitigate the total cost of ownership significantly.

We feel that BMC Software's products are really doing well because they are increasing IT efficiency within firms' eco systems, while pushing their costs lower. The facilities offered go hand in hand with today's IT needs, thereby aiding demand growth. The trend has also been noticed in management's commentary in the recent conference call at which the software services provider highlighted continued momentum in cloud computing and SaaS, as well as mainframe products.

BMC Software fared well in its recently concluded quarter with the bottom line exceeding our estimate. However, total bookings dropped double digits due to weak ESM (Enterprise Service Management) license bookings. ESM suffered from sales capacity constraints as sales force turnover penalized sales productivity.

Though we believe that BMC Software's growth prospects remain solid, as evidenced by the steady flow of wins, near-term challenges, the European exposure and lowered 2012 guidance make us cautious. Moreover, growing competition from big players such as International Business Machines Corp. ( IBM ), Hewlett-Packard Company ( HPQ ) and CA Inc. ( CA ) increase its challenges.

BMC Software holds a Zacks #3 Rank, implying a short-term Hold rating.
