Best/Worst Weekly ETF Returns: TUR Plummets

Turkey- and Japan-focused ETFs dragged their feet in the week ended Thursday, June 6, while volatility strategies outperformed as markets trended downward.

The S&P 500 fell 31.85 points, or 1.9 percent, over that same five-day period, closing yesterday at 1,622.56.

The iShares MSCI Investable Market fund (NYSEArca:TUR) stumbled 14.34 percent, with most of the fund's fall happening on Monday following a massive sell-off in the Turkish stock market, triggered by mounting social unrest.

Turkey's epic stagger earlier this week serves as a reminder that single-country funds such as TUR can deliver a powerful sucker punch to a portfolio if the political and social temperatures get too hot. TUR has a broad Turkish focus, but it is akin to single-stock risk just the same.

Japan ETFs, which have enjoyed strong inflows and stellar performance to-date this year, lagged behind their peers as well, with the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Fund (NYSEArca:DXJ) sloughing off 8.43 percent and the db X-trackers MSCI Japan Hedged Equity fund (NYSEArca:DBJP) falling 8.19 percent. The FirstTrust Japan AlphaDex fund (NYSEArca:FJP) also underperformed, falling 6.4 percent.

Volatility strategies like the C-Tracks Citi Volatility ETN (NYSEArca:CVOL), which spiked 17.73 percent, were the week's biggest gainers, delivering heightened performance on the downturn of markets, as they're designed to do.

Commodities funds like cocoa and cotton also boasted notable performances, as seasonal upswings boosted value.
