The iShares MSCI Global Silver Miners (NYSEArca:SLVP) was No. 1
on IndexUniverse's "Bottom 10 1-Day Performers" list, falling 7.72
percent as the price of silver yesterday declined below $29 an
ounce.
Precious metals and emerging market funds dominated the
bottom-performers list, with investor concern growing about the
impact of Greece's potential departure from the eurozone and the
implications of that development for the global economy.
The Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF (NYSEArca:GREK) was No. 2 on the
list, declining 6.67 percent.
As they already have done several times this year, investors
once again threw cold water on the notion that precious metals are
the ultimate hedge in the time of uncertainty.
The Global X Silver Miners ETF (NYSEArca:SIL) was No. 4 on the
bottom-performers list, losing 4.99 percent. The ETRACS CMCI Long
Platinum Total Return ETN (NYSEArca:PTM) was No. 8 on the list,
with 4.44 percent in losses.
The Global X Global Explores ETF (NYSEArca:GLDX) was tied for
No. 8 place on the list with 4.44 percent in losses, as the price
of gold declined to a new 2012 low.
Four of the worst performers were in emerging markets, as
investor concern continued to grow about the reliance of these
countries on overstretched European lenders.
The Market Vectors Latin America Small-Cap Index ETF
(NYSEArca:LATM) was No. 3 on the list, returning 4.99 percent in
losses.
Top Performers
Volatility-related ETNs topped the best-performers list, a sign
that such investments do provide protection when equity markets are
selling off.
The C-Tracks Exchange-Traded Notes on Citi Volatility
(NYSEArca:CVOL), one of consistently best performing
exchange-traded products in the past couple of weeks, topped the
list, returning 6.97 percent.
The ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSEArca:VIXY) was No.
2 on the list with 5.89 percent in gains.
The VelocityShares VIX Short Term ETN (NYSEArca:VIIX) was No. 3
on the list with 5.80 percent in gains.
