The iShares MSCI Global Select Metals & Mining Producers
Index Fund (NYSEArca:PICK) was one of the worst-performing funds
Thursday, July 12, shedding 3.82 percent of value amid another
day of weakness in the broad stock market.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed lower for the sixth
consecutive day Thursday, dropping 31.26 points, or 0.25 percent,
to end at 12,573.27, still pressured by lackluster corporate
earnings reports and forecasts, which have added fodder to fears
that the global economy is slowing down. Gold prices were also
down on the day, giving up 0.7 percent.
The market was eagerly awaiting China's second-quarter GDP
figure, which many feared would rubber-stamp the notion that the
global economy is on shaky legs. The number, released late
Thursday evening, came in at 7.6 percent, confirming China's
slower growth and spurring hopes of more stimulus measures
ahead.
Commodities ETFs remained some of the best-performing funds,
continuing to tag on gains on poor and still-deteriorating crop
conditions across the U.S. grain belt.
The Teucrium Wheat ETF (NYSEArca:WEAT) and the Teucrium Corn
ETF (NYSEArca:CORN) posted gains of more than 3 percent each
Thursday, ranking as the two best-performing funds of the
day.
