The iShares MSCI Spain Index Fund (NYSEArca:EWP) was the
worst-performing exchange-traded fund Friday, July 20, shedding
6.76 percent, as a group of Europe-focused ETFs gave in to renewed
concerns surrounding the region's economic health.
On Friday, Spain's borrowing costs rose again, as Spanish
10-year yields hit an all-time high since the euro was adopted.
Concerns that a planned bailout of Spain's banking system might not
be enough to help the troubled economy undermined the performance
of equities markets both in Europe and here.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 120.79 points Friday,
closing 0.93 percent lower at 12,822.57.
Other Europe-focused ETFs were also in the line of fire, such as
the iShares MSCI Italy Index Fund (NYSEArca:EWI), which gave up
5.33 percent of value as more than 1.27 million shares traded
On the flip side, natural gas funds were again among the day's
best performers Friday, as unusually hot weather across much of the
U.S. continued to support demand for natural gas, which is used in
many cooling systems.
The United States Natural Gas Fund (NYSEArca:UNG) gained 2.58
percent on the day, while the iPath Dow Jones UBS Natural Gas Total
Returns ETN (NYSEArca:GAZ) tagged on 2.43 percent in gains.
