The Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF (NYSEArca:GREK) was the
worst-performing fund Monday, June 25, bleeding 7.4 percent on news
that Greece's finance minister was stepping down just a week after
he took office.
The latest tidbit coming out of the troubled eurozone added to
growing concerns that there might not be an easy way out of
Europe's still-unraveling debt crisis, a prospect that would hinder
the U.S.' ability to spur sustained growth. The Dow Jones
industrial average closed the day 1.1 percent lower at
12,502.66.
Funds like the iShares MSCI Spain Index Fund (NYSEArca:EWP) and
the iShares MSCI Italy Index Fund (NYSEArca:EWI), which tap into
two of the most troubled European economies right now, were also
among the worst-performing ETFs Monday, each shedding nearly 5
percent.
On the flip side, the Market Vectors Egypt ETF (NYSEArca:EGPT)
staged a recovery, with gains of 12.25 percent after having ranked
among the worst-performing ETFs in the past week.
Investors seem to still be fretting about the implications of
Egypt's first democratic election on Sunday going to a putative
Islamist candidate, Mohammed Morsi, who was backed by the Muslim
Brotherhood.
A couple of Teucrium commodities-based funds were also strong
performers Monday, with the Teucrium Wheat ETF (NYSEArca:WEAT) and
the Teucrium Corn ETF (NYSEArca:CORN) tagging on gains of 8.0
percent and 5.8 percent, respectively.
