Australian Online Job Vacancies Rise 1.9% In January
CANBERRA -(Dow Jones)- Australian job vacancies advertised on the internet
rose by a seasonally-adjusted 1.9% in January from December to 218,938, a
government report showed Wednesday.
The figure is down 4.9% from the same month a year ago, according to the
Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, whose report counts vacancies
newly lodged on the SEEK, My Career, Career One and Australian JobSearch
websites.
Victoria state recored the largest increase in January, up 3.4%, followed by
Western Australia, where vacancies climbed 1.3%. The Australian Capital
Territory, or ACT, recorded the largest decline of any state, dropping 2.6% in
the month.
On year, internet job vacancies increased 20% in the Northern Territory and
Queensland state, while in Western Australia they rose 13%. Tasmania has
recorded the largest decline, down 19%.
All eight occupational groups measured by the index rose on month in January,
with the largest increases for machinery operators and drivers, sales workers,
and clerical and administrative staff.
On year, five of the eight occupational groups recorded declines, led by a
drop of 11% in the sales-workers category, and a 9.4% fall in jobs classed as
clerical and administrative.
