Asian Stocks Mixed As Investors Await Fed Meeting Minutes

Asian shares were mixed as investors awaited minutes from the July FOMC meeting due Wednesday.

Investors will be looking for clues as to when the Federal Reserve may begin tapering its bond-buying program.

Japan's stock market was rattled by reports Japan's government would raise the severity of the latest leak at Fukushima to a level 3 event, or a serious radiation incident.

However, mild support came from Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda's comments that he would not hesitate to expand the bank's already massive asset buying campaign if the economic outlook darkened.

In ADR news, China Telecom ( CHA ) says first-half EPS was RMB 0.13, above the Capital IQ estimate for RMB 0.12. Sales rose 14.1% to RMB 157.5 million, matching forecasts. Subscribers rose 0.9% in July to 1.19 billion.

Tianli Agritech ( OINK ) says it signed an agreement with WUSHANG MART to sell cuts of its Tianli-Xiduhei black hog meat through three of WUSHANG MART's retail outlets located in Wuhan City, Hubei province.

The Nikkei ended up 0.21% at 13,424.33, the Hang Seng down 0.69% at 21,817.73 and the Straits Times down 0.63% at 3,108.99.
