Several big-name companies are expected to report quarterly results next week, including Apple Inc. ( AAPL ) and oil
giants Exxon Mobil Corp. ( XOM ) and Chevron Corp. ( CVX ).
Investors will also keep an eye on the Federal Open Market Committee's meeting and its statement, looking for
potential signs of changes in the Fed's bond-buying program.
Meanwhile, auto makers are expected to show an increase in U.S. new-auto sales during October.
Looking for Tapering Clues at Fed Meeting
The policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee meets Tuesday and Wednesday, and markets will be listening to hear of
any hints about when the Fed will start scaling back its bond-buying stimulus. Observers think recent weakness in the
job market is a good indication that the Fed will hold off on tapering for now.
Eyes on Apple's Outlook
Apple reports its results Monday, keeping the consumer-technology giant in the spotlight for yet another week. This
past week, the company unveiled new products at its iPad event, while activist investor Carl Icahn continued to push for
a big stock buyback. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters are expecting the consumer-technology giant to post per-share
earnings of $7.93, and observers will be paying keen attention to the company's fiscal first-quarter guidance.
Oil Giants Expected to Report
Exxon, expected to report Thursday, has underperformed somewhat this year, but the stock is still considered a safe
haven since it's big enough to withstand lower oil prices and not as vulnerable as its peers to natural-gas prices.
Analysts are expecting Exxon's per-share earnings of $1.77, on revenue of $107.4 billion.
Chevron, which is expected to report Friday, said earlier this month that it believes third-quarter earnings will be
lower than they were in the second quarter. Analysts expect earnings of $2.73 a share on revenue of $58.4 billion.
Big Insurers Due to Report
American International Group ( AIG ), which has been in talks to sell its International Lease Finance Corp. airplane-
leasing unit to a Chinese investment fund, reports Thursday. Analysts are expecting per-share earnings of 94 cents on
revenue of $8.63 billion for the quarter.
MetLife Inc. ( MET ) and Allstate Corp. ( ALL ) are also expected to post their quarterly results.
Visa, Starbucks, Other Notables Reporting
Credit card companies Mastercard Inc. ( MA ) and Visa Inc. ( V ) are expected to report next week, along with Starbucks
( SBUX ), Comcast Corp. ( CMCSA ) and Kraft Foods Group Inc. ( KRFT ).
New U.S. Auto Sales Expected to Rise
Major auto makers are expected to report next Friday that sales of new automobiles in the U.S. climbed 13% in October,
according to Edmunds.com. The automotive-information provider said jitters over the debt standoff dissipated after a
deal was struck, and consumers should have boosted their buying in the latter half of the month.
