Amazon.com ( AMZN ) recently announced that it has decided to offer a new and improved version of its parental software controls for kids on its Kindle Fire tablets. Apart from managing screen time and setting bedtime curfews, the new version of Kindle FreeTime options will be equipped with educational features. Currently, the Kindle FreeTime Unlimited service is available at a price of $2.99 per month.

Kindle FreeTime, Amazon's parental control software will now enable parents to block access to Kindle's more fun-oriented apps like cartoons and games, until specific study goals are met. The new feature named "Learn First" will enable parents to ensure that learning comes first and set daily educational goals for their children.

Amazon has added numerous new educational books, apps, games and videos to the Kindle FreeTime Unlimited subscription service. Any Kindle Fire tablet using the FreeTime app will automatically get access to these newly-added features.

Amazon has gone on to become a veritable consumer electronics giant from being an Internet retailer initially. The company is planning to refresh its line-up of Kindle Fire tablets to a greater extent in the next few months. However, Amazon might not stop there. If rumors are to be believed, the company has many more devices in the works, including a smartphone, an audio streaming device and an Apple ( AAPL ) TV competitor.

Though Amazon's hardware competes with both Apple and Google ( GOOG ), it is much more destructive for the search giant. This is because Amazon has adopted Google's Android operating system, but not Google Play.

Amazon is one of the leading players in an extremely fast-growing market. In the last reported quarter, Amazon's revenues of $17.09 billion were up sequentially as well as from the year-ago quarter. Management attributed the revenue increase to the growing consumption of digital content across different categories owing to the advantageous value proposition Amazon provides to its customers.

Currently, Amazon has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in the technology sector is Netflix Inc ( NFLX ), which carries a Zacks Rank # 1 (Strong Buy).
