Accenture, Hortonworks Team Up for Big Data - Analyst Blog

Accenture Plc. ( ACN ) and Hortonworks have entered into an agreement that will expand Accenture's capabilities in big data analytics. The strategic alliance between the two companies extends their relationship formed in 2012.

Hortonworks is a well-known developer of enterprise Apache Hadoop. Its Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) is enterprise quality software that provides users with complete tools for test and quality assurance. HDP basically brings together the most useful and stable versions of Apache Hadoop and its related projects into a single tested and certified package.

Apache Hadoop is an open source software, which offers business insights from a huge amount of structured and unstructured data at a minimal cost. It primarily comprises three main functions, which include storage, processing and resource management. Therefore, software architecture built on Apache Hadoop helps businesses and enterprises process and survey new data sources.

Storage of unstructured data has become a major problem. Big Data storage solutions need to handle capacity and provide low latency for analytics work. Traditional Relational Database Modelling Systems (RDBMS) and storage and analytic solutions are not capable of handling the vast quantity of unstructured data due to its high velocity and real-time consumption pattern. This calls for specialized non-relational databases like Hadoop.

According to Gartner, Big Data analytics is expected to play a significant role in preventing cyber-attacks as it traces data breaches at a much faster pace than traditional security software. Gartner expects 25.0% of enterprises to adopt Big Data analytics for this purpose by 2016.

Through this agreement Accenture will allow organizations to cost-effectively capture, process and share data in any format and at any scale. It will also generate instant results apart from offering vast storage. Thus, the solution will improve the business performance of its clients.

However, increasing competition from companies like IBM ( IBM ), Computer Sciences Corp. ( CSC ) and Hewlett-Packard Co. ( HPQ ), a strained spending environment as well as significant exposure to Europe may temper growth to some extent.
