National Bank said: "The MSCI All Country World Index has advanced 2.2% in April, a sixth straight monthly rise. But one had to know where to place one's bets, the gain would have been much weaker without the startling 12.7% jump of the Japanese market. Emerging markets in particular had a tough month, posting a decline of 0.4%. It must be acknowledged that the economic backdrop has been deteriorating lately, especially in emerging countries.

"Under these conditions it is hardly surprising that the world's cyclical stocks have fared worse than others. The corollary, of course, is that the Canadian market has been struggling. Among the 45 country markets in the MSCI index, Canada's April performance ranks 34th."
