How does a company obtain a symbol to trade on NASDAQ?
A company may request a symbol for trading on The NASDAQ Stock Market by using our on-line form.
An applicant to list on The NASDAQ Stock Market may request to reserve a symbol up to 24 months in advance of an initial listing application submission. A company may request up to three symbols, and the reservations will remain in place for up to 24 months. Symbols not used during the 24-month reservation period will be made free and available for other potential applicants. Reserved symbols can be released at any time with given notice. Additional symbol reservations can then be made if the applicant wishes to change its reserved symbols, assuming the new symbols are free and available.
The NASDAQ Stock Market does not reserve symbols for the OTCBB or the Pink Sheets. (Updated: June 3, 2009)
My company is currently trading on The NASDAQ Stock Market and is considering changing its symbol. How do I reserve a symbol and what information is required?
A company may submit a request to reserve a new symbol for trading on The NASDAQ Stock Market by using our on-line form.
The company may reserve up to three symbols, and the reservation(s) will remain in place for up to 24 months.
The company should contact Corporate Data Operations no later than two business days in advance of the desired change date to coordinate the symbol change. The company should also complete the Notification: Change in Company Record and submit the $2,500 record-keeping fee. The company must provide documentation that the symbol reservation has been confirmed by NASDAQ Symbol Reservations. (Updated: June 3, 2009)
How many characters or letters may a NASDAQ symbol have?
A company may reserve symbols that are between one and five English characters in length. The reserved symbol will be considered the company's root symbol prior to any appended suffix or special conditional identifier. (Initial Posting: June 3, 2009)
How many symbols may I reserve?
The company may reserve up to three symbols. The company may release a symbol and reserve a different symbol at any time (and receive a new 24-month reservation) with two exceptions:
- If the original symbol reserved by a company was removed from an OTCBB company, the NASDAQ company or applicant may not reserve a different symbol. .
- A company may not reserve a symbol if the reservation period has expired unless an application is submitted within the 24-month reservation period. If the application is not submitted within 24 months, the reservation expires, and the symbol becomes available. (Updated: June 3, 2009)
How long may I reserve a symbol?
Symbol reservations are for 24 months. However, if a listing application is submitted within the 24-month reservation period, the ticker symbol is held pending approval of the application. If the application is not submitted within 24 months, the reservation expires, and the symbol becomes available for other potential applicants. What is the cost to reserve a symbol?
There is no cost to reserve a symbol.
How do I know my request was received and/or that my reservation is confirmed?
When a company submits the reservation request, an automated email confirming receipt is sent. After the reservation has been reviewed and processed, the company will then receive a second automated email, confirming the reservation. If the company does not receive these email notifications, please contact NASDAQ Symbol Reservations at symbol.reservation@nasdaqomx.com. (Updated: June 3, 2009)
